What is Balayage?

Balayage Pronounced (BAH-LEE-AHGE), is a French word meaning ‘sweeping,’ as in to sweep on a lightener to create highlights. Balayage is the technique of free-hand painting highlights onto the hair, to create a soft and natural gradation of lightness towards the ends. This natural-looking highlighting technique is not just for blondes but is actually used on all shades of hair to add soft, sunkissed dimensions.

There are many application preferences that produce slightly different results. Some colorists don’t separate the hair, while others separate the hair with cotton pieces or foils. Balayage has become popular because it allows colorists to customize certain pieces of the hair. The customized natural-looking placement allows for a softer grow out.

What is Highlights?

Highlights is a general term that refers to (strands) of hair that are lighter than the base color. Highlights are not just for blondes. Highlights are traditionally applied using a method called “foiling,”; sheets of foil are used to separate strands of hair that have been covered with color/lightener. The foil keeps the lightener from getting on the surrounding hair and can allow the lightener to lift more effectively. Foil highlights are generally placed close to the scalp, lightening the strands of hair from the roots to the ends. Typically re-done about every 10-12weeks.

Partial Highlight foil

A partial highlight foil service uses about 20 foils or less to lighten the crown, roots and side hairline. A partial foil service does NOT mean foils will be placed around the entire head and all of the hair. Partial only covers the top. This is for a more subtle highlight.

Full Highlight foil

A full highlight foil service uses between 45 and 100 foils around the entire head. A full foil includes foiling the crown, hairline, and underneath of your hair; So, if you pull your hair up you will always want to have a full foil service.

If your hair goal is to go from darker hair to almost completely blonde, a partial foil won’t do that. To get the result you want, you’ll want a full foil. The more foils the higher the price can go in.

Full Color

Full color is when a single color (not a lightener) is applied from the roots to the ends of the hair, usually with no dimension and the color is fluid throughout all of the hair. This typically is for someone who loves the solid single-color look.
